7. To Paul Demeny

Charleville, 10 June 1871.

To M. P. Demeny

[Two poems enclosed: ‘Les Poètes de sept ans’ (‘Seven-year-old Poets’); ‘Les Pauvres à l'église’ (‘The Poor in Church’).]

Here – don't be angry, – a motif of comic drawings: it's an antithesis to the sweet perennial vignettes of sporting cupids, where hearts are taking flight plumed with flames, green flowers, soaking-wet birds, Leucadian promontories, etc…. The trio-lets, too, what's more, will go

Where the perennial vignettes,

Where the sweet verses.

Here, – don't be angry:

[A third poem enclosed: ‘Le Cœur du pitre’ (‘Heart of a Clown’).]

A.R.

June 1871.

That's what I'm doing.

I've three requests to make to you

burn, I want you to, and I believe you'll respect my wishes like those of a dead man, burn all the verses I was foolish enough to give you at the time of my stay in Douai:30 be so good as to send me, if it's possible and if you please, a copy of your Glaneuses,31 which I would like to reread and which it's impossible for me to buy, my mother not having gratified me with a single brass farthing for six months, – have pity! finally, be so kind as to reply, whatever it may be, to this despatch and to the earlier one.

I wish you a good day, which is very kind of me.

Write to: M. Deverrière, 95, sous les Allées, for

A. Rimbaud.

Monsieur Paul Demeny,

Paris.
